A Facebook Flashback I Wasn’t Ready For
I was scrolling through Facebook when a notification popped up: “Then & Now.” Curiosity got the better of me, and I clicked—and there they were: my senior photos from ten years ago, staring back at me. I froze for a moment, caught somewhere between nostalgia, cringing, and gratitude. It was a simple image, but it carried so much weight—a reminder of who I was, how much has changed, and the journey that brought me to where I am today.
Ten years ago, I was standing on the sand at Old Orchard Beach, Maine, camera in hand—or rather, my mom’s camera—bright and early just after sunrise. We had driven nearly an hour and a half to get there, and the world felt quiet, almost as if the beach itself was holding its breath for the morning light. The waves lapped gently against the shore, the sky was soft and golden, and a few seagulls called out across the water. There was no Pinterest, no mood boards, no inspiration guides—I had nothing but my mom, her camera, and a vague idea that this photo should somehow represent me. My outfit was casual, my pose probably awkward, and my mind full of uncertainty, excitement, and a touch of self-consciousness. I was still figuring out who I was, what I liked, and how I wanted to show up in the world.
Looking back, it almost feels like I’m seeing someone else entirely. Someone trying to keep up with trends, someone preoccupied with being “cool” enough to fit in, someone still learning her voice, her style, and what truly mattered. Now, ten years later, the contrast is striking. I’ve learned to embrace simplicity, to slow down, and to appreciate the beauty in ordinary moments. I’ve grown in confidence, clarity, and faith, and I’ve come to understand that life is richest when lived intentionally. God has guided me through every season—through the uncertainties, the awkward stages, and the quiet moments of reflection. His presence has given me the patience to grow, the courage to embrace who I am, and the perspective to see the story behind each moment.
As much as I cringe sharing that old photo, it’s also a gift. It’s a reminder that growth is often quiet and cumulative, shaping us in ways we can’t always see in the moment. That awkward, casual senior photo captured more than just a pose—it captured a season of life, a feeling, and a story that continues to unfold. It reminds me why I love photography: it preserves the present, allowing us to reflect, remember, and see the growth in ourselves and others. And it reminds me that God’s hand is in every part of our journey—both the big milestones and the small, fleeting moments.
Thinking about that photo made me realize why senior portraits matter so deeply. They’re not just images—they’re stories frozen in time. They capture a season of life that is unique, fleeting, and full of potential. They give us a way to pause, reflect, and celebrate who we are right now, knowing that God is working in every part of our story. And while the future is uncertain, these photos become anchors—a reminder of the person you were, the growth you’ve experienced, and the story that continues to unfold.
If you’ve ever dreamed of photos that feel true, warm, and timeless—photos that you’ll treasure for years—I would love to help make that happen. Senior sessions are now open for booking, and I would be honored to create a keepsake like this for you or your teen. Together, we can capture the personality, style, and spirit that make this season uniquely yours, in a way that feels effortless, natural, and full of warmth.
Even if you’re just reading along, I’d love for you to pause for a moment and think about your own journey. What season of life would you capture if you could press pause right now? Consider it a small reflection exercise—you can journal it, tell a friend, or just savor the thought. Sometimes reflecting quietly is the most meaningful interaction we can have with our own story.
